Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is a Disney - Square Enix cross over game made for the Gameboy Advance. It is the first sequel to the the game Kingdom Hearts and the prequel to Kingdom Hearts II.

Gameplay

The player must ascend Castle Oblivion. On each floor they must use a World Card which will turn the floor into a world from the main character's memory. Most of these worlds are taken from Disney movies. The exceptions are Traverse Town, Twilight Town, Destiny Island, and Castle Oblivion (which is the final floor). Once inside these worlds the player must create new rooms using map cards. Different map cards have different effects on the room. The player must get to the end of each world. Along the way they will become involved in conflicts in those worlds. In the Disney worlds these conflicts revolve around Disney characters.

Along the way the player will have to fight heartless that wander around the worlds. The player enters a battle screen and he must use battle cards from to defeat the heartless. These cards are selected in battle by shuffling through a deck. Each card allows to player to use a certain technique. A card will disappear once it is used but the player can reload most cards. These are the different types of cards:

Attack cards are a normal melee attack.

Friend cards summon the players party members to use an ability. These cards are not held in the deck but appear randomly on the battlefield.

Magic cards allow the player to use various magical abilities.

Item cards reload the certain cards faster than by a normal reload. Item cards cannot be reloaded.

Enemy cards are sometimes picked up from enemies. They create an automatic effect that will help the player. Enemy cards are part of a separate deck and cannot be reloaded.

Each card has a level (except for enemy cards). Once a card is played it will block all cards that have a lower level. If a higher card is played than the first card will be disabled. Any side that has their card disabled will be stunned for a few seconds. The levels range from zero to nine. Zero cards can disable any card but they can also be disabled by any other card. Up to three cards can be stockpiled and released at once to combine their levels. Some of these combinations become new abilities, called sleights. The first card of these combinations cannot be reloaded.
