The lips are a fleshy area of skin above and below the opening to the mouth that contain a large number of touch receptors. The touch and sensitivity of the lips helps to weed out unhealthy items from being put into the mouth and ingested. They are also designed to facilitate speech, and allow for amorous displays of affection with others (kissing).
