Loan words are foreign terms incorporated into another language. Frequently they represent imported products or technology, but can also be systems of thought or action.

Some of the best known examples of loan words are from East Asian countries:

  • karate (Japanese KAH RAH TEH, English KA RODDY)
  • judo (JOO DOH)
  • tae kwon do (Korean TAY GWUN DOH, English TIE KWAHN DOH)
  • harakiri (suicide, Japanese HA RA KEE REE, English HARRY CARRY)
