Lt. Cmdr. Joseph O'Callaghan
On March 19,1945, the aircraft carrier USS Franklin was conducting operations off the coast of Japan when it was attacked by a Japanese bomber. The ship was hit by two bombs which caused hundreds of deaths and horrific injuries on board. Lt. Cmdr. Joseph T. O'Callaghan, a Catholic chaplain, gave last rites to the dying sailors, organized firefighting and rescue operations and led men below to wet down magazines that threatened to explode. For his bravery he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was a member of The Society of Jesus and he died in 1964.
