Makoto Shinkai (Family name: 新海 Given name:誠), born 9 February 1973 (age 36) is a Japanese animator, writer, and director of anime films and short features.
Although he had been influenced by anime and manga since his school days, especially the works of Studio Ghibli, he started work as a graphic designer for the video game company, Falcom. During this period, he created the black and white shorts, "She and Her Cat" (Kanojo to kanojo no neko) and "Distant Worlds" (Tooi Sekai), which won several awards.
His next project came about, after he drew a sketch of a girl sitting in a cockpit, holding a cellphone. Encouraged by friends to expand on his idea, he left Falcom and created "Voices of a Distant Star" on his own Apple computer at home. The soundtrack was created by a friend, the musician Tenmon. Shinkai has always taken a deep interest in all of his films, often taken on tasks such as editing, sound production and cinematography. His works are known for his use of light and shading, which give his productions a unique quality.
An all-round producer, he not only writes the stories for his films, but also contributed the lyrics for the theme song for "The Place Promised in Our Early Days", "Kimi no Koe" (Your Voice).
