Mary Winkler murdered her minister husband on March 26, 2006 by shooting him in the back of the head with a shotgun while he lay in bed. She then fled to Alabama with their children. His body was found by his parishioners when he failed to show up for the evening service. Mary Winkler later confessed to the murder.

For killing her husband she served 2 full months in a psychiatric facility and was released, apparently cured of her malady and ready to be a productive member of society. Her lawyers claimed she suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and she blamed her husband for being "critical of her". Her husband had no response in his defense, after all, he was dead.

Newsweek magazine had an article on her alleged psychiatric condition. Oddly, they never used the word "alleged" and the panel discussing it seemed to discuss it as if it was a foregone conclusion.[1]
