Metals are shiny, solid, and conductive substances, such as iron. They contrast with the nonmetals. They are found on the left side of the periodic table. Most elements are metals. Some metals are very strong and light, like aluminum. Others are soft and heavy, like lead. The rare earth metals have to be stored in oil because they oxidize explosively when they come into contact with water, even water vapor in the air.
