Admiral Mike Mullen (b. 1946) is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and the highest ranking and most powerful officer in the U.S. military. He was chosen by President Bush in Sept. 2007, and continues under President Obama. He is known as a quiet, somewhat inarticulate yes-man who calls himself the military version of inept Rodney Dangerfield.
He was born in Los Angeles, where his father was a Hollywood publicist. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1986, Mullen built his career in the unglamorous destroyer fleet's engineering branch. He rose rapidly in the Defense Department of Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, becoming Vice Chief of Naval Operations (2003 to 2004) and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe (2004 to 2007).
