Militant atheism

Militant atheism is a movement which holds that religion has had its chance in the world, has proven to be a negative force, and therefore should be replaced with skepticism towards God or miracles. It can be found in varying degrees of militancy, from atheist authors such as Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins who advocate atheism and oppose religion through books and speeches but do not advocate violence against religious people, to communist regimes, who advocate atheism and oppose religion through the repression and murder of believers.

The atheism in communist regimes has been and continues to be militant atheism and various acts of repression including the razing of thousands of religious buildings and the killing, imprisoning, and oppression of religious leaders and believers.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] In respect to current events, the North Korean government practices brutal repression and atrocities against North Korean Christians.[3][4] In 1999, the publication Christian Century reported that "China has persecuted religious believers by means of "harassment, prolonged detention, and incarceration in prison or `reform-through-labor' camps and police closure of places of worship."[8] In 2003, owners of Bibles in China were sent to prison camps and 125 Chinese churches were closed.[6] China continues to practice religious oppression today.[7]

According to researcher Rodney Stark, militant atheists were responsible for the Enlightenment, initially intended to supplant Christianity.[9] This is especially clear as atheists attempted to create an atheistic state religion during the French Revolution.

Militancy and Atheist intolerance

The roots of atheist militancy can be seen in the fragmentary and dogmatic nature of atheist groups. Modern atheists attack and ridicule agnostics and deists alike for failing to reach their conclusions: "...one is soon struck by the hypocrisy of these individuals, as they proclaim rationality and free inquiry, yet denigrate philosophical allies. Agnostics are attacked for failing to accept unknowable conclusions, while deists are attacked for accepting the wrong ones....."[10]
