Mortal Kombat is the first of the Mortal Kombat fighting game series, it features 7 playable characters, 7 fighting gounds and most of the controversial material in the series. With the exception of Goro, all the characters are digitalized actors.

In one-player mode, the player fights through a tournament consisting of a series of one-on-one matches against other computer-controlled characters, with the final two matches being against Goro and Shang Tsung.

The game excited controversy within Christian fundamentalist groups and several Democrat members of Congress due to the games ability to change the clothes to nude with a simple cheat code. Others were outraged that the final boss in the game was God, who was depicted as warrior-like and black. Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman held congressional sessions discussing whether the video game industry needed to be controlled.
