The most-read Bible verses begin with John 3:16 and then include passages from both the New Testament and the Old Testament. The top ten verses according to a study done by biblegateway.com are (quoting the ESV here):[1]

John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Jer 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[2] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Rom 8:28: And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Phil 4:13: I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Gen 1:1: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Prov 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Interestingly, John 1:1 ("In the beginning was the Word ....") is not in the top ten. It is ranked number 68. Also not making the top ten is an oft-quoted passage from the Epistle to the Romans, which athletes particularly like: "If God be for us, who can be against us?" Romans 8:31
