NFL and depression
NFL players and depression are highly correlated. "Depression prevalent in ex-players," explained one article in ESPN in 2015, detailing specific examples in addition to the overall problem.[1] CBS reported that "NFL retirees more likely to have depression and cognitive problems, brain study shows."[2] A study by the University of Texas demonstrated that "NFL players were more likely to show the physical symptoms of depression."[3]
Disappointed fans and depression
While some attribute this increased depression to the head injuries sustained by NFL players, fans of the NFL who do not suffer those injuries can also be depressed. "Sports: What makes NFL fans get so depressed, angry, and sometimes volatile when their teams don't make the playoffs or Super Bowl, and how do they get past those feelings?", is a question asked in one forum.[4]
