Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corp. (NJROTC) is a program for high school students operated by the United States Navy to promote patriotism, develope informed and responsible citizens, develop respect for constructed authority, develop leadership potential, promote high school completion, promote higher education, promote community service, develop a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, individual discipline and leadership, promote an understanding of the basic elements and need for national security, provide information about the military services as a possible career, provide an alternative to gangs, and provide an incentive to live healthy and drug free.[1] The program operates mostly in the public school system, although some private schools have NJROTC units, and some units allow homeschooled teenagers to participate at public school campuses. Members engage in military drill procedures, study various academic topics related to the military, wear official Naval uniforms, and participate in physical training (PT) in their NJROTC classes. NJROTC units typically have armed and unarmed drill teams, physical training teams, academic teams, and rifle teams. These teams often attend competitions, hosted at high schools, college campuses, and military installations, where the teams compete with other units' teams. The Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard operate similar programs.
