Increasing male suicide
According to the National Crime Bureau, male suicides especially of married men are increasing at a rate of 4% per year . According to the study of professor K Nagaraj of Madras institute of Development Studies, every year nearly 23000 married men are driven to suicide by wives.
Misuse of Section 498a
The Indian law enforcement system is very much corrupt. A law is easily used as a tool of blackmail. The number of innocent men getting arrested under section 498a is a matter of grave concern.
Under Section 498a of the Indian Penal Code, a man, his parents, siblings and even friends can be arrested without any investigation if his wife complains of harassment by her husband and his family. This law is non-bailable, non-compoundable and cognizable, i.e. the accused can be jailed without warrant and they can get bail only from a judge after the due process of bail argument. It takes nearly 6 years for the trial to finish and get acquitted. Many unscrupulous Indian women falsely complain of harassment by filing a complaint under section 498a, so that they can claim for an exorbitant amount of alimony and get a out of court settlement. Thousands of innocent people were arrested and imprisoned even when there is no evidence of dowry demand or cruelty towards the woman. Many innocent men and their parents have committed suicide after failing to fight the costly lawsuits.
In 2005, 58,200 lawsuits were filed under Section 498a of IPC. More than 80% of them are false.
On 20th July, 2005, Supreme Court bench presided by Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice H.K.Seema warned against misuse of 498a. They expressed concern that it can lead to legal terrorism. They also stated, "Dowry Law is a shield, not an assassin's weapon".
Section 498a of Indian Penal Code is a gender-biased law. Local newspapers do not analysis the truth, they start writing about the men's family only based on the women's compliant.
Income tax
Men in India are subjected to more strict rules regarding income tax than women. Women are exempted from income tax having annual income of up to Rs. 75000, but men are exempted from income tax having annual income of up to Rs. 50000.
Discrimination in employment
In India, jobs like receptionist, telephone operator, personal assistant, pre-primary school teaching etc. are dominated by women and men are widely neglected in these fields.
