Pickle

A pickle is any foodstuff that has been preserved by anaerobic fermentation in brine or marinating and subsequent storage in an acid solution such as vinegar.

Foods commonly pickled include cucumbers, gherkins, onions and cabbage.

Metaphor

A 'pickle' can be an embarrassing or awkward situation: "Andrew Schlafly has got himself into a bit of a pickle with his threats to report editors to the FBI".
