Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (崖の上のポニョ Gake no Ue no Ponyo) is a Japanese anime feature film, released in 2008 by Studio Ghibli and written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
He delivers a re-telling of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid" as he tells the story of Sōsuke, a human boy and Ponyo, the daughter of a sea wizard, who wants to become human so she can be with Sōsuke.
As with most Ghibli films, overseas distribution was picked up by Disney and an English language dub is due for release in late 2009.
Synopsis
A young boy, Sōsuke, befriends a strange looking, talking goldfish whom he names Ponyo. However, unknown to Sōsuke, Ponyo is a magic fish who has decided that she wants to live with Sōsuke and the other humans. Her magician father, who is deeply xenophobic when it comes to humans, forces her to return to the sea and locks her in his home.
Determined to return to Sōsuke and give up her underwater life, Ponyo uses one of the father's spells to free herself. However, in doing so, she creates a crack in the ancient magic spell, and places the world in danger. Together, Sōsuke and Ponyo must set things right and save the planet.
