A prairie dog is a small burrowing mammal common to the grasslands of North America. The prairie dog is a rodent and a member of the Sciuridae (squirrel) family. Prairie dogs are so named because of their doglike bark and are mostly found west of the Mississippi River. Their bark is a warning signal to other prairie dogs in the colony.
