Quinine is a medicine from the bark of a tree. It is a bitter tasting drug which is effective in treating malaria.

In 2020, hydroxychloroquine, which has a molecular structure based in quinine, is being used to treat COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Quinine is also the active ingredient in tonic water.

Quinine enabled imperialism to expand as it allowed British explorers to access areas that they previously could not access for health reasons.
