Rubato

Rubato (from the Italian "robbed") is a musical expression used to refer to a certain way of altering the rhythm of a piece of music, in which the tempo is alternately sped up and slowed down for expressive effect.
It is most commonly found in Romantic music, particularly that of Chopin.
