SIL International (originally the Summer Institute of Linguistics) is an Christian linguistic non-profit organization based in the United States which documents and studies the lesser-known languages of the world.

SIL International publishes the Ethnologue, a reference work which contains statistics for 6,912 languages, such as number of speakers and Bible availability.

History

SIL International started in 1934 as the Summer Institute of Linguistics, a small summer camp whose purpose was to train Missionaries for SIL's sister organization, Wycliffe Bible Translators.
