Sadomasochism, often referred to by the acronym BDSM, is a personality disorder by which an individual desires to inflict pain or humiliation upon another person and/or derives gratification from the infliction of pain or humiliation upon himself. It is an immoral behavior almost always associated with sexual perversion. Psychologically, it is referred to as act of dominance and submission.

"Sadomasochism" is compounded from "sadism" and "masochism", which terms are derived from the names of the writers the Marquis de Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, respectively.
