Satoshi Kon (Family name: 今 Kon Given name: 敏 Satoshi), born 12 October, 1963 (age 46) is a Japanese screenwriter and director of anime films and television series.
He studied at the Musashino College of the Arts and began work as a manga artist (mangaka), before making the transition to anime. He is still involved in many artistic elements of his works, especially character design, despite working as a full-time director at Studio Madhouse, which also produces all his work.
His work often focuses on aspects of Japanese life, for example "Tokyo Godfathers", which highlighted not only the plight of the homeless in Japan, but also some of the reasons behind it, as a sub-plot to the main story. He also regularly blends fantasy and reality in his storytelling, something he says he learnt from watching the George Roy Hill-directed film of Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5". "I was very much impressed how in the movie different places and times would be put together and expressed at the same time as we follow the protagonist," he said. [1]
