The United States Secretary of Commerce is head of the Department of Commerce and a member of the Presidential Cabinet. The new Secretary is Gary Locke, former Gov. of Washington. The previous Secretary was Carlos M. Gutierrez, a Cuban-American.

Obama nominated two people to fill the position; Gov. Bill Richardson and Republican Sen. Judd Gregg. Richardson withdrew when he was caught in a Pay for play scandal. Gregg cited disputes over the 2010 census and economic stimulus plan. Locke was confirmed by the Senate on March 24, 2009 [1].
