Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941) was one of the most famous of all the British designers of steam locomotives, in particular express steam locomotives such as the A4 Pacific class, the most famous of which is Mallard, which since the 1930s has officially held the world record for the fastest steam locomotive.
There is also a steam locomotive (also one of his A4 Pacifics) named after him, currently to be found operating on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
