Spacetime is the combination of three-dimensional space and the dimension of time to form a four-dimensional universe.

Until the theory of relativity, it was possible to study space and time separately. In the early 1900s, Poincare, Minkowski, and Einstein claimed that the concepts of space and time are actually intertwined, and that one could only truly make sense of spacetime as a whole. Gravity is, according to relativists, best understood as a manifestation of the curvature of spacetime.
