Synopsis
10-year old Chihiro Ogino and her family are moving house. As they drive to their new home, they get lost. They come across a tunnel within a forest and, despite Chihiro's reluctance, decide to invesigate. Unknown to them, they have crossed from the human world to the forbidden realm of the kami - the gods and spirits of Japanese lore, where humans are despised.
At the other end of the tunnel they come across what appears to be an amusement park. Here, her parents find a food stall, laden with fresh food. Chihiro is worried as her parents begin to eat and runs off. She comes across a strange boy who tells her to leave before "it's too late." Returning to her parents, she is dismayed to find they have been turned into pigs, as punishment for eating the food of the gods. Worse, the amusement park is only a part of a giant communal bathhouse used by the gods, and unless she intervenes, her parents are going to be on the menu at some point.
In order to survive, and save her parents, Chihiro must work at the bathhouse and make herself useful. At the same time, she must find within herself the courage and resolve she needs to save her parents and escape from this mysterious, magical world, facing various trials and danger as she goes.
