Gameplay

The controls for SFII include an eight-direction joystick and six buttons. The joystick moves the fighter, with pressing it up resulting in a jump, and blocking attacks by pushing it back. The buttons are divided into three punch buttons and three kicks, each a different strength. A combination of the joystick movement with a button does a special move.

On the playfield it is a one-on-one match. There is a score for the player, which increases with each successful hit against the opponent, and a vitality gauge for each combatant. The time limit is 99 seconds. When a combatant's vitality gauge is exhausted during the fight, the other fighter standing is the winner. There are also three bonus rounds, where the fighters break a car, barrels, and flaming oil drums to increase their score.

The similarities between Mike "M" Bison and Mike Tyson resulted in the name shuffle of characters between the American and Japanese versions.

Versions

The first version, SFII: The World Warrior, was released in 1991. Following the success of The World Warrior, Capcom released SFII': Champion Edition, which offered the chance to play as the four bosses. Soon, hacked, bootlegged versions of this game started popping around, having faster game speed and the chance to switch characters mid-round. Capcom sued the hackers and won, and produced their own official ROM revision of Champion Edition: SFII' Turbo: Hyper Fighting. This introduced new special moves to most of the fighters and was much faster, hence the "Turbo" in the title. This version is regarded as the best of all versions of SFII to date by most players.
