Sun Microsystems

Sun Microsystems Inc. is a major manufacturer and vendor of computers, software, computer components and IT services. It was founded in 1982 with four employees (three Stanford University graduates and one from Berkeley) and its headquarters are situated in Santa Clara, California. The name SUN derives from the initials of Stanford University Network.

Sun developed their own version of UNIX called Solaris and also the Java programming language. In 2007 Sun's stock symbol was changed from SUNW to JAVA.

In January 2010, Sun was bought by Oracle Corporation.
