A surface is the outermost level of a given object. It can also mean an outward appearance as distinguished from an inner nature, i.e. "he seems nice on the surface, but he's really deceitful." Liberals are often different on the surface than they are in actuality.

In geometry, the surface is the outer boundary of a shape. An important problem in mathematics is to compute the surface area of complicated shapes.
