I'm not going to edit the article since I don't remember where I read it but I do seem to remember reading that it wasn't so much as a hoax created to support evolutionary theory, but one created and sold by a poor Chinese man who knew that paleontologists were looking for such a fossil and would pay a lot of money for it.
