Original contributors note: this article is part of WP:CONCISE which states,

This is an attempt by some members of the Wikipedia community to create a "Concise Version" of Wikipedia by listing the "essential articles" of a small encyclopedia in one convenient place.
Most "concise encyclopedias," by definition, have at least 15,000 articles. As it is now, Wikipedia has 45,900 articles and while this is clearly good, it is also somewhat unmanagable and overwhelming to people who are trying to use the encyclopedia as part of a course of homeschooling or autodidacticism (self education) or just general reading.
