Talk:Economics Lecture One
America’s health care system, by far the greatest in the world
Although I understand that this is an American project, I think you'll find there's little substantiation for this assertion. Clearly, excellent healthcare is available in the United States - the President's of foreign nations have often been rushed to the Mayo Clinic and the like, for example. However, that is no reflection on the overall system. And I think you'll find that that particular claim is never thought to be held by the US. The healthcare systems of many other nations are excellent, and in recent World Health Organization surveys, the US ranked fairly low in the world. This is not to denigrate the US system, merely to point out that unsubstantiated assertions - with little experience of healthcare in the rest of the world by the authors, I'm assuming - shouldn't be part of a series of Economics lectures. - There's no denying that the American health care system is the best in the world. The proof is in your answer: non-Americans who have the means flock to the U.S. for medical care.
- Your obtuse statement that "I think you'll find that that particular claim is never thought to be held by the US" is a liberal circumlocution. Liberals do want to denigrate and end free enterprise in medicine, but that doesn't fool anyone here.--Andy Schlafly 09:52, 12 June 2009 (EDT)
- There's no denying that the American health care system is the best in the world. - no doubt you have a source or reference to which you can direct the reader to support this assertion? Non-Americans who have the means flock to the U.S. for medical care. - that superb healthcare is available in the US is undeniable. However, it is only available to those who, as you point out, "have the means". And that is a direct comment about the system, which is what your article is referring to. That excellent high-speed trains are available in the US (e.g. Acela) is undeniable, yet no-one would contest that the world's best high-speed rail system is that of either Japan or France.
