On examining a few Sacagawea dollars, I'd have to say the words "In God We Trust" are pretty darn hard to read; they're in very small type tucked behind the back of her neck, much as it is behind Washington's neck in the new quarters (the ones with the state themes). (It's distinctly easier to read on the Susan B. Anthony dollars, where the inscription is under her chin).

The Sacagawea dollars are pretty thick, with a relatively large amount of room on the edge.

It's at least possible that the words placed on the edge of the new coin are as large, maybe even larger than on the older dollar coins.

On the other hand, the edge is a very high-wear area. Dpbsmith 19:17, 2 March 2007 (EST)

I don't think the lettering is all that small on the Sacagawea dollars:

But thanks for the comparison, which I'll add to the content page.--Aschlafly 19:44, 2 March 2007 (EST)

Apropos of nothing (I'm not trying to prove any particular point) here are some crude images of the Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollars, placed directly on my scanner's platen.. I don't think we'll know how they compare to the new dollar coins until we actually have them in our hands... it does look to me as if the lettering is larger on the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

As I view them on my screen right now, they look to me as if they give a reasonably accurate impression of how visible the inscription when I look at the coins in ordinary room light. The one at http://edge.i-hacked.com/wp-content/sacagaweacoin.jpg looks much clearer than the real thing... and I've no doubt so does the Mint's picture of the edge of the new coins.

Googling on the Web and on Groups there is lots of discontent about "In God We Trust" being on the edge. What's not clear to me is whether people have actually seen the new coins or whether they just hate the very idea. (The inscription is literally being marginalized!) • RichP's images are exactly what was needed. Incidentally, I'd almost go so far as to call the Mint's picture[1] misleading... Dpbsmith 06:39, 3 March 2007 (EST)
  • P. S. Am I just curmudgeonly or is that a rather unflattering picture of Washington? His expression actually looks like a match for that of the equally dour Susan B. Anthony.... Dpbsmith 06:41, 3 March 2007 (EST)

Redirect this article?

(Fixing my comment which I messed up...) I suggest we redirect this article to the relevant subsection on the more generic United states dollar coin, where I have already added this information. Dr. Richard Paley 09:38, 9 March 2007 (EST)
