Do we really want this to be in the "medicine" category? DanH 22:53, 7 August 2007 (EDT)

I believe it is still used even in the 21st century in Western (USA) medicine. Oddly enough the main use for it isn't for it's soporific or analgesic properties but it's main side effect: constipation. When someone on a course of radiation and chemotherapy has the side effect of diarrhea, opium is frequently prescribed. Samwell 09:07, 8 August 2007 (EDT)
Er, you've missed the point: it is still used in medicine in the 21st century - hence the issue about the worldwide shortage and its farming in the UK to provide medicine. File:User Fox.png Fox (talk|contribs) 18:15, 13 August 2007 (EDT)

I didn't know that. We should definitely expand on that in the article. DanH 18:27, 13 August 2007 (EDT)

Don't you think this should be merged with opium in some form instead of having two different, yet largely overlapping, articles? Thanks Learn together 11:04, 14 August 2007 (EDT)
