Question: what does "wins the crown from France" mean? The play, which is not entirely historically accurate, deals with John's wheeling and dealing to win the throne from Arthur of Brittany, the rightful heir, and the political complications this causes. It refers to John's struggle with Rome over Stephen Langton and balances the tragedy of young Arthur's death and his mother's grief against the integrity and wit of the Bastard of Faulconbridge. And yes, he dies in the end, as promised in the title. But John does not win "the crown from France."AlanE 18:45, 26 October 2008 (EDT)
