Tartan is a fabric design utilising vertical and horizontal stripes in a variety of colours and thicknesses to create recognisable patterns denoting clan or organisational membership. Tartan is especially associated with the wearing of the kilt.

In Scotland tartan is also used in the design of hats, ties, soft furnishings, wallpaper and carpets.

The word 'tartan' is also used adjectivally to denote Scottishness. The Scottish National Party are also known as the 'tartan Tories'. Supporters of the Scotland football team are called the 'Tartan Army'.
