Terrahawks was a British television series created by Gerry Anderson and Christopher Burr.

Background

Since the failure of The Secret Service in 1969, Anderson had finished making Supermarionation shows and had continued with live-action projects, including UFO, The Protectors and Space: 1999.

Anderson joined with Christopher Burr to produce Terrahawks using a puppetry process dubbed Supermacromation, which used latex hand-puppets that allowed for freer movement of the characters on-screen. The series was also more tongue-in-cheek compared to Anderson's previous works such as Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, both of which focussed on the suspense factor rather than the humour.

Premise

The series took place in the year 2020 AD, shortly after the destruction of a NASA research station on the planet Mars. The aggressors are a race of androids that have revolted against humanity and are now using Mars as a stepping-stone for the conquest of planet Earth.

Fighting against the invaders are the Terrahawks, a small organisation stationed at their base - the Hawknest - in South America, using a variety of sophisticated weapons and gadgets for the oncoming war against the invaders.

Production

Terrahawks aired on London Weekend Television between October 3, 1983 to July 24, 1984. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes, each running at 25 minutes in length.

Characters

  • Dr. "Tiger" Ninestein - The aggressive, trigger-happy American leader of the Terrahawks, who is one of nine clones created by Dr. Gerhard Stein. If he is killed, he can be replaced within 24 hours by one of his other clones. His first name is unknown, but his alias "Tiger" references the myth that a cat has nine lives. Voiced by Jeremy Hitchen.
  • Captain Mary Falconer - The British second-in-command whose own feelings for human life balance out Ninestein's aggressive tendencies. She also acts as the pilot of Battlewing, a large freighter that carries other machines and equipment much like Thunderbird 2. Voiced by Denise Bryer.
  • Captain Kate Kestrel (real name: Katherine Westley) - The black pilot of the Hawkwing fighter, and a famous pop-singer. Her record label is Anderburr Records (an amalgam of "Anderson" and "Burr"). Voiced by Anne Ridler.
  • Lieutenant Hawkeye (real name: Hedley Howard Henderson III) - The Dixie gunner of the Hawkwing, whose eyes were replaced with micro-computers after an accident, thus enhancing his targetting abilities. Voiced by Ben Stevens.
  • Lieutenant Hiro - The Japanese operative aboard the Spacehawk space station, who keeps a collection of flowers aboard that he deeply cares for and occasionally reads poetry to. Voiced by Jeremy Hitchen.
  • Zeroids - Spherical robots who act as footsoldiers for the Terrahawks and act as gunners aboard the Spacehawk. Two of the Zeroid leaders include Sergeant Major Zero (voiced by Windsor Davies), who is frequently bullied by Ninestein, and Space Sergeant 101 (voiced by Ben Stevens), who commands the Zeroids aboard the Spacehawk.
  • Zelda - The main antagonist of the series, commanding the android army that intends to conquer Earth. Zelda has power over matter, which she often uses as a means of teleportation, and uses an army of Cubes in response to the Zeroids. Voiced by Denise Bryer.
