The Aquabats
The Aquabats is an American ska/punk/rock band formed in 1994. They came from Huntington Beach, California and are with the record label, Nitro Records. They are known for their blue outfits and lively music. They also claim themselves to be superheroes that fight evil through music. Their live performances are active and very entertaining. These highly acclaimed shows include their music and on stage “battles” with costumed villains. The Aquabats’ mythology has grown in size since they began. They have added many allies and enemies to the ever-changing roster.
History
The Early Years
When The Aquabats began, the starting line-up was the Caped Commander (Christian Jacobs) on vocals, Crash McLarson (Chad Larson) on bass, Chainsaw (Courtney Pollock) and Ben the Brain (Ben Bergeson) on guitars, Catboy (Boyd Terry) and Prince Adam (Adam Deibert) on Trumpets, Nacho (Chad Parkin) on keys, and Roddy B. (Rod Arellano) on drums. Soon to join the band was Ultra Kyu (Charles Gray) on guitar. With nine members in the band, they came into the world of music and started spreading their name. They also started creating fictional stories for the band at this time. One of the members of the band also worked for the wet suit company Aleeda, where he fashioned out of spare rashguards and extra pieces of neoprene matching costumes for the whole band. A huge fan base was developed and their first CD was recorded in 1995. This CD was called The Return of the Aquabats.
1997
In 1997, The Aquabats members drummer Roddy B., pianist Nacho, and guitarist Ben the Brain decided to leave the band. Roddy B. was replaced by famous drummer Travis Barker, who was known as the Baron von Tito. Nacho was also replaced by Jaime the Robot (James Briggs). Jaime the Robot was a great addition to the band because he also knew how to play horns. At this time, the Caped Commander changed his pseudonyms to the Bat Commander and Chainsaw to Chainsaw, Prince of Karate. With new members and new names, the band went back to the recording studio in 1997 to record their second full-length CD, The Fury of the Aquabats! This CD contained the soon-to-be anthems of the band “The Cat With 2 Heads!” and the minor hit “Super Rad.” “Super Rad” also became the first song by the Aquabats to have a music video made for it. With the release of The Fury of the Aquabats!, the Aquabats began to have an even greater following.
1998
Sadly in 1998, drummer Baron von Tito left the band to continue his career with punk band Blink 182. To replace him, Doctor Rock (Gabe Palmer) was called in. Soon, they recorded their third CD, The Aquabats vs. the Floating Eye of Death! This album relied heavily on synthesizers pop melodies. This wasn’t received very well and they lost the record label and part of their fan base. During this time, the Bat Commander added MC to his name. To make his performances different and memorable, he would color with a black marker a fake mustache onto his face and blacked out one of his teeth. He still does this to this day. They also compiled a list of outtakes to the album Myths, Legend, and Other Amazing Adventures, Vol. 2. However, this wasn’t enough to replace the fans that left them. Soon drummer Doctor Rock left and the band sunk into a period of recession.
2000 - Current Day
From 2000 to 2003, the band lost contact with the world. The lost of their drummer and record label hit them quite hard, but they got back on their feet, relocated to San Diego with a new drummer named Ricky Fitness (Ricky Falomir), and released the DVD, Serious Awesomeness. This DVD contained one whole live show of the Aquabats, a small history of the band, two music videos, and assorted clips of live songs. The following year, they self-released a new EP called Yo! Check Out My Ride! EP. After the release of this CD, trumpeter Prince Adam left the band and the Aquabats lost their horn section. This did not stop the Aquabats. In 2005 they signed onto Nitro Records and released their newest CD Charge!! With this CD under their belt, they toured again with and created a one year anniversary edition of Charge!! Sadly, guitarist Chainsaw, the Prince of Karate left in 2006. The Aquabats were fortunate because a backup guitarist named Eagle “Bones” Falconhawk (Ian Fowles) who new all the songs stepped in. This new line-up is the same as it is today. Right now, the Aquabats are working on their fifth CD which features track titles inspired by fan ideas.
Aquacadets
The Aquabats also have a fan club called “The Aquabats Cadet Faction.” Members of the club are called aquacadets or cadets. To join, you have to take a “pledge,” which is held at the beginning of each month. This involves a new member to pay thirty-five dollars. In return, you get a t-shirt, an official cadet patch, a newsletter, a CD welcoming you to the club, stickers, and special privileges. These special privileges include access to a cadet-only online forum and invitation to the Cadet Summit, an Aquabats’ concert that is held once a year only for cadets. Aquacadets are asked to support the band by spreading their name, coming to concerts, wearing costumes, and listen to their music.
Mythology
Another major aspect of the Aquabats is their mythology. The Aquabats create stories about themselves. One big story they created is a fictional history of the bang. It begins with the original nine members coming from an island called Aquabania, which is inhabited by humanlike bat creatures. They nine fled in a hollowed out log when the evil Space Monster “M.” After a long voyage, they washed up upon the shore of California. They where taken in by Professor Monty Corndog (Parker Jacobs) who used chemicals to revive the fallen nine and give them superpowers. They were given radioactive rashguards, power belts, and anti-negativity helmets and took up music so they can “take over the world” with their superpowers. Their plan is to attract millions of fans so they can go back to their homeland and defeat the evil Space Monster “M”. The Aquabats also imagined many other villains and allies to appear onstage when they perform.
