The Awakening is a short novel by Kate Chopin published in 1899. It takes place in New Orleans and Grande Isle, Louisiana. It depicts Edna Pontellier, who realizes that she is unhappy in her marriage to her husband, a Creole businessman by the name Léonce Pontellier. She commits adultery and then suicide when she realizes that she will never really be free from the restraints of her marriage and society.
