The Sweeney

The Sweeney was a British television police series of the 1970s, centred on the activities of the Flying Squad (a unit of London's Metropolitan Police investigating serious crimes such as armed robbery); the two main characters were Detective Inspector Jack Regan, played by John Thaw, and Sergeant George Carter, played by Denis Waterman. 53 episodes of the drama were made, firts aired in four series on the ITV network between 1975 and 1978. In addition, two spin-off films were made, Sweeney! in 1977 and Sweeney 2 in 1978.

The title, The Sweeney, is an example of Cockney rhyming slang: Sweeney = Sweeney Todd = Flying Squad.
