Anthony John Hancock (b 12 May 1924; d 24 June 1968) was a British actor and comedian.

Born in Birmingham and raised in Bournmouth, Hancock served in the Second World War, before achieving modest fame in the radio show Educating Archie. In 1954 he began work on the iconic show Hancock. Later becoming a model for the standard sitcom, Hancock was one of the most popular radio phenomena of the 1950s. A subsequent television incarnation, also written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, confirmed Hancock's gift for dry, sombre humor. Unhappily for Hancock, later efforts to break away from Galton and Simpson failed and he committed suicide in Australia in 1968. A drinker and a womaniser, Hancock is often regarded as the archetypal miserable comic. His shows are, however, still hugely admired in Britain.
