A trenchcoat is a type of waterproof coat or jacket that can be made out of either heavy-duty cotton or leather. During the 1920s-1940s, many gangsters, especially those of African American, Latino, Eastern European, Mediterranean, or Irish descent would wear them alongside a fedora. Trench coats were also commonly worn by hunters, fishermen, soldiers, and detectives.
