Tuscany is a province in northern Italy. Its largest city is Florence. Tuscany and particularly Florence became an economical and cultural centre during the Renaissance, and produced many of the greatest artists of that period. The poet Dante was a Florentine, and made the region's politics and history a theme of his Divine Comedy; due partly to that work's enormous influence, the Tuscan dialect became the basis of the modern Italian language.
