Ulster Unionism is a political term used to describe the proportion of the population of Northern Ireland (Which encomposses most of Ulster, hence the name) who believe in maintaining the Union between the United Kingdom and the quasi independent state of Northern Ireland. Unionism as a whole politically rejects unification of the island of Ireland as one national entity. The overwhelming majority of Ulster Unionists tend to be Protestant, and similarily the overwhelming majority of Republicans (That proportion of Northern Ireland who wish to join the Irish Republic) tend to be Roman Catholic.
