The Wheel and axle is a simple machine which provides a mechanical advantage in turning a rod by using a wheel to turn a rod. This mechanical advantage is the radius of the wheel divided by the radius of the axle. The wheel and axle can also be used to increase the speed at which the axle turns, because the outer edge of the wheel travels much more quickly that the edge of the axle.[1]
