World History Homework Twelve Instructor: Andy Schlafly Read the lecture. You can substitute in a question from honors into your regular assignment, if you are not in honors. You can also substitute in a question raised from class or the lecture.

1. World War II: when, where, who and why? Explain.

World War II occurred in Africa, Europe, and Asia, in the time period 1938 to 1945. The countries involved were too numerous to count as this was a world war. World War II was essentially a continuation of World War I as they were mostly the same sides. Germany was coming back for revenge and was being stirred by the oratorical powers of Adolf Hitler.

Good, but you should name the major countries and identify which sides they were on. (Minus 1)

2. Compare and contrast communism and fascism, with at least two examples of how they are similar and two examples of how they differ.

Communism and Fascism are similar as both forms of government usually have dictators and leave out god. But they are different in that fascism puts the country first and communism is allegedly about treating people equally.

Good, but need a second difference as requested by the question. (Minus 1).

3. Why do you think Hitler and his supporters killed so many people? Explain.

I believe he killed them because he needed a scapegoat to work people into a frenzy and to secure power against those who opposed him.

That was a big part of it. Good answer.

4. Discuss the effect of communism spreading to China.

When communism spread to China it was a big turning point for communism because China had the largest population of any country in the world. Now it is one of the biggest exporters of goods. So when communism took control of China it took control of one of the most powerful nations.

5. Describe any aspect of the Cold War or the Korean War or the Spanish Civil War (with reference to Orwell, if you like).

The Inchon landing was a very interesting and brilliant tactical maneuver. It is very interesting because although his advisors were vehemently opposed to the idea General Macarthur carried through with his plan and landed troops in the middle of the North Korean army which was invading the South Korean peninsula.. As half of the army continued down the South Korean peninsula Macarthur cut off communications to it and trapped the better half of the North Korean army. This signaled victory for the Americans and the South Koreans in this fight, but then the Chinese entered on the North Korean side.

6. How did technological advances or insights help the Allied forces? Be specific.

The discoveries in physics and cryptology helped the Allied forces break the German enigma and the study of physics helped many of the worlds greatest scientists make the atom bomb.

7. Should the United States have entered World War II in Europe? Discuss.

If the United States had not entered the war in Europe all of Europe would have fallen to Germany and Russia and even if the U.S. succeeded in Asia Europe still would have fallen to Germany and Russia. Germany and Russia would have quickly invaded Britain and soon all of Europe would have been under their control. At this point the spies in the Soviet Union would have sufficient knowledge about the atom bomb to make one, and perhaps the allies would never have broken the enigma, so if the U.S. had not entered the war in Europe Germany and Russia would have won.

Honors Questions (answer any 3 in addition to the above questions)

H1. Why did genocide tragically kill so many more people in the 20th century than in the rest of world history combined?

This is because Genocide only became very wide spread in the Nineteenth to Twentieth centuries because there were more systematic and efficient ways of finding and killing people, plus mass communications played a role. Also the Holocaust contributed to the genocide death count, along with the genocide in Rwanda, in Armenia, Cambodia and elsewhere.

Good analysis, though I think the 19th century theory of evolution played a role in causing some intellectuals, who are more influential than most, to support the evil of genocide.

H3. Was it right for Churchill not to warn a town about a German bombing if he knew the town would be bombed?

Churchill had broken the enigma and the Germans did not know it. But had Churchill warned the village that there was going to be a bombing the Germans would have known that Churchill had cracked the code and all of the hard work put into cracking the code would be obsolete as the Germans would have just picked a new code, perhaps one that would have been harder to break. In the future our knowledge of the enigma helped save many lives in World War II, more lives than in the village.

H6. Was General Macarthur right or wrong in the Korean War?

General Macarthur was right in the stroke of genius of the Inchon landing, but he was wrong in his misjudgment of the temperament of President Truman. No matter how skilled a military commander you are you will always need to be politic and when Douglas Macarthur misjudged Truman and kept fighting in South Korea he was eventually fired for disobeying.
