The term X-Factor Culture refers to the increasingly common attributes in modern youth of celebrity worship and the desire for fame and success without effort, typified in the UK television talent show X-Factor (the US equivalent, licenced from the UK production company, is American Idol). X-Factor encourages people to think that they can reap the highest rewards of fame by instant success, and that hard work and long application to "learning ones trade" can be by-passed. Artistic originality is discouraged in favour of derivative and formulaic performances, and participants and audience alike are encouraged in the quasi-worship of the celebrity judges, who are presented as powerful, almost god-like beings.
