The Yangtse (Chinese: Chiangjiang, 'Long River'), is a Chinese river and, at 3,965 miles (6,380 km) in length, is the longest river in Asia. It rises on the Qinghai plateau and flows southwards, north-eastwards, then eastwards through Sichuan, Hubei, Anhui and [[Jiangsu provinces, entering the East China Sea (Donghai) near Shanghai. The major cities of Chongqing, Wuhan and Nanjing lie on the banks of the Yangtse. The construction of a major hydro-electric power scheme on the middle reaches of the river has caused protests by environmentalists in China and abroad.
