The jet stream is an air current located six to nine miles above Earth, travelling in a generally eastward direction in North America.

Usually thousands of miles in length but only hundreds of miles wide, and quite thin in depth, the jet stream results from the intersection of hot and cold air masses, which push the intermediate air in an eastward direction.
