In the context of marriage, an annulment is a legal proceeding whereby one or both parties seek to have the marriage ended, as if it never took place.

An annulment differs from divorce in that, if granted, means legally the marriage never existed in the first place; a divorce means a legal marriage is dissolved.

Also, while a divorce can be granted for any or no reason, an annulment is limited to specific grounds stated in the law (e.g. a marriage entered into by fraud, such as a woman marrying a man who says he is divorced, only to learn later that he is still married).
